7 Must-Have Tools for Content Creators in 2026 (One Per Job, With Real Prices)

Most "must-have tools" lists are seven versions of the same tool. Seven video editors doesn't help anyone — you need one editor, and six other things.

So this is one tool per job. Ideas, editing, design, voiceover, AI video, colour, keywords. With prices, because a must-have list that hides the cost is one that gets argued with in the comments.

The stack

JobToolCost
IdeasRescroll$6/mo
EditingCapCutFree
DesignCanvaFree tier
VoiceoverElevenLabsFree / $6 to sell
AI videoVeo 3Free allowance
ColourDaVinci ResolveFree

Five of seven are free. The whole stack runs around $12/month.

1. Ideas — Rescroll ($6/mo)

Every other tool on this list assumes you already know what you're making. That's the stage that actually stops people.

Rescroll turns the posts, videos and carousels you've saved into a library you can ask questions of — "what did I say about hooks?", "find the clip about pricing" — and gives you the answer with the post attached. It's the difference between staring at a blank editor and starting from something you already thought.

2. Editing — CapCut (free)

Free, exports without a watermark, and does 4K on desktop. Auto-captions in dozens of languages are built in, which alone replaces a $20/month subscription.

It's the fastest path from footage to posted video, and for short-form that speed matters more than depth.

3. Design — Canva (free tier)

Thumbnails, carousels, covers. The free tier covers the overwhelming majority of creator work; the paid plan mostly buys background removal, brand kits and the premium element library.

One thing to check: if you're putting a design on merchandise or into a logo, read the licensing terms for premium elements specifically.

4. Voiceover — ElevenLabs (free, $6 to monetize)

The free plan gives about 20 minutes of audio a month. Two things to know: it requires you to credit ElevenLabs, and it does not include commercial rights.

If your video is monetized, sponsored, or for a client, you need the paid Starter tier at around $6/month. That's the single most common licensing mistake creators make, and it's a $6 fix.

5. AI video — Veo 3 (free allowance)

The best-looking AI video with a free option, and it generates audio natively, which most competitors don't.

The allowance is small, so treat it as the tool for the one shot that matters — an establishing shot, a visual you can't film — rather than the one you experiment in. For volume experimentation, Kling's daily-refreshing free credits are the better fit.

6. Colour — DaVinci Resolve (free)

The free version is the real software: full editor, professional colour grading, audio suite and visual effects, no watermark, no time limit.

Most creators don't need it for editing if they have CapCut. They need it for the moment a video looks flat and no filter fixes it. Learning basic colour grading is the fastest visible quality jump available for free.

7. Keywords — Creator Search Insights (free)

Built into TikTok. It shows what people are actually searching, including a "content gap" view of searches with demand and not much supply.

It's free, it's native, and most creators have never opened it. Search is how a growing share of short-form content gets found, and this is the only keyword tool that reads the platform's own data.

What's deliberately not here

  • A scheduler. If you're on one or two platforms, native scheduling in TikTok Studio and Meta Business Suite is free and adequate.
  • A caption tool. CapCut and every platform do captions now.
  • An analytics platform. Native analytics answer more than most creators use.
  • A second editor. One is enough. Two is procrastination.

The honest summary

You can cover every stage of making content for about $12 a month in 2026. If you're spending noticeably more, the cause is almost always overlap — two editors, two design tools, a scheduler duplicating something native.

The stage worth paying for is the one at the top, because it's the only one that isn't solved by free software.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need all seven? No. Start with editing, design and ideas. Add the rest when a specific job demands it.

What if I don't use AI at all? Then it's five tools and it's cheaper. Nothing here requires AI except the AI-specific entries.

Is CapCut or DaVinci Resolve better? CapCut for short-form speed. Resolve for long-form, colour work, or anything you want to look properly finished.

Why is the ideas tool the only paid one? Because it's the only job on the list that free software hasn't solved. Editors, design tools and colour graders got commoditised. "What do I make today" didn't.

Six of these tools are waiting for you to know what you're making.

Rescroll turns everything you've saved and posted into a library you can talk to — so the blank page starts with your own best ideas in it.
